Ametista do Sul from Porto Alegre: your questions answered

When we announce a departure for Ametista do Sul, the same questions come up, and they are good ones, because most of the group does not yet know the destination. This text gathers the ones we receive most on WhatsApp, answered the way we answer there: without the waffle.

How many kilometres is it from Porto Alegre to Ametista do Sul?

About 450 kilometres to Ametista do Sul, in the north-west of Rio Grande do Sul, in the Frederico Westphalen region. The first stop on our departure is a little further: Derrubadas, home of the Salto do Yucumã, about 470 kilometres from the state capital. The first day includes a morning on the road, in a leito (sleeper) coach, with a toilet on board and comfort for resting.

How many days does the trip last?

Three days and two nights, from Friday to Sunday: the long-weekend format. That is enough for the Yucumã safari, the church, the mines, the museums and the winery, without rushing.

Where does the coach leave from, and at what time?

Boarding is at the Estacionamento Haud Park, in Porto Alegre, at 6.30am on Friday. It is the same departure point as the other Mundo a Passeio trips, so anyone who has travelled with us already knows it. The return reaches Porto Alegre on Sunday evening.

Does the mine have steps? Is it cramped?

The mine tour is made in an adapted vehicle through the galleries, with a helmet provided on site. It is not a long walk or a climb. The route is flat, and the tour itself is advertised as accessible for wheelchair users. Anyone with strong claustrophobia should talk to us beforehand, but the setting is a wide gallery, not a narrow tunnel.

And the church, are there steps?

No. The Igreja Matriz São Gabriel is in the town centre, at street level. The panoramic tower next to it has a lift, so you can go up and enjoy the view without a single step.

Is the walk to the Salto do Yucumã long?

After the vehicle safari inside the Parque Estadual do Turvo (about 15 kilometres on a dirt road, in the park's own vehicles), the walk to the viewpoints is short. The day includes stops, time for photos and experienced guides alongside the group.

Can I buy amethyst there? How do I carry it in my suitcase?

Yes, and it is one of the best parts. In Ametista do Sul the stone comes straight from the source: mines, museums and the Shopping das Pedras, a gallery with more than twenty shops. From a pocket-sized souvenir to an amethyst cathedral weighing dozens of kilos, there is something for every size of suitcase. Just leave a little corner of your luggage free for the journey back. We have prepared a separate text on this: buying amethyst in Ametista do Sul.

What is included in the package?

Return leito (sleeper) coach, local transport, two nights with breakfast, a Cadastur guide and agent, local guides, tickets for every stop on the itinerary, one lunch at the underground restaurant, a café colonial (colonial-style coffee buffet) and the tastings (winery and Museu do Bambu). Drinks and Saturday's free meals are not included. The price and conditions are on the November trip page.

How do I book?

By WhatsApp, with me. A deposit secures your place and the remainder is paid in instalments until boarding, by PIX (Brazil's instant payment system). If the date does not suit you right now, message us anyway: we will let you know when the next departure for Ametista do Sul opens.

Who accompanies the group?

A travel agent and a tour guide registered with Cadastur accompany the group from boarding to the return, and in each city there is a local guide for the history side of the visit. It is the same arrangement as on all Mundo a Passeio departures.

Any other questions?
