You can spot an experienced traveller in the boarding queue: calm, with the right suitcase and their documents to hand. It is not luck, it is preparation. Here is the checklist we recommend for anyone hitting the road with Guatambu, with special care for those travelling in a group.
Which documents do I need to bring?
- Original RG (Registro Geral, the Brazilian ID card) or CNH (driving licence), in good condition. For trips to Argentina and Chile, an RG issued less than 10 years ago, or a passport.
- Your health plan and insurance card, if you have one.
- A copy of your documents, kept separate from the originals.
- Your emergency contact written on paper, not only on your phone.
How should I carry my medication?
- Your regular medication in the quantity needed for the whole trip, plus a few spare days, in your hand luggage (never in the luggage hold).
- The prescription for any medication that requires one.
- A small kit: painkillers, antihistamines, travel sickness tablets and plasters.
What clothes should I pack?
- Comfortable clothes that are easy to combine; the secret is dressing in layers to adjust to heat and cold.
- A warm layer within reach for the coach air conditioning.
- Closed shoes that are already broken in for walking. Never wear new shoes for the first time on a trip.
- If the destination has water (thermal baths, beach), do not forget a swimsuit and flip-flops.
What should go in my hand luggage?
Water, a snack, medication, documents, glasses, a charger and a light change of clothes. It is the bag that saves the day when your suitcase is in the luggage hold.
What is better left at home?
Jewellery and valuables, too much cash and that "suitcase of everything you might possibly need". Travelling light is travelling happy, and whatever is missing we sort out together along the way.
With the right suitcase, you have energy left for what matters: enjoying the destination and the friendships made on the road.
