Double-decker sleeper coach: what the trip from Porto Alegre to Minas is like
From Porto Alegre to Sacramento, in the Triângulo Mineiro, it is about 1,500 kilometres, or roughly 22 hours of travel including stops. When I say this, the reaction is always the same: "twenty-two hours on a coach?" And then I explain what changes everything: the November caravan to the Triângulo Mineiro and Caldas Novas travels on a leito total (full sleeper) double-decker coach. It is not the regular scheduled coach you have taken all your life. In practice, it is a hotel on wheels. This article describes what the journey is like.
The caravan coach
Three things define our coach. First: it is a full sleeper, and the seat reclines until it truly becomes a bed, not the kind of recline that leaves your neck twisted. Second: it has two decks, which gives the group more space and comfort. Third: it has satellite internet on board, which works on the road, so you can send a photo to your children from the middle of Rio Grande do Sul without depending on a mobile signal.
I will not name a make or model here, because what matters is not the badge on the front of the coach but the configuration: full sleeper, two decks, internet on board. That is the standard we book for the long journeys.
What it is like to sleep on the coach
This is an art you can learn, and the sleeper makes it much easier because the seat becomes a bed. These are the tips I give our group:
- Wear proper travel clothes: comfortable trousers, a loose top, socks that do not squeeze. Tight trousers and belts are the enemies of a good nap.
- Bring a blanket and a neck pillow in your hand luggage, your own, just the way you like them. Anyone who has their own pillow sleeps better, whether in a hotel or on the sleeper.
- Keep medication in your hand luggage, never in checked luggage: both regular medication and the "just in case" kind, with the prescription.
- Earplugs and an eye mask work wonders for anyone who wakes at the slightest light.
- A charged phone: with the coach's internet you can chat as much as you like until you drift off.
And a tip from someone who has seen many first-time travellers: nobody needs to sleep the whole night in one go. The body dozes off, two hours here, an hour there, and the rest adds up. In the morning you wake up in Minas.
Onboard service, stops and toilet
The first day of the trip includes an onboard service: a snack on departure from Porto Alegre, and coffee and water on the long stretches. The stops are planned within the 22 hours, for the toilet, for meals and to stretch your legs, and the coach also has a toilet on board for the stretches between stops. In other words, nobody goes hungry or gets caught short; the logistics are the trip's concern, not yours.
Who looks after the group on the coach
The tour guide and the travel agent accompany the whole route, from boarding to the return, the same arrangement as on every Mundo a Passeio departure. If you have a question about times, stops, luggage or medication, someone from our team is on board throughout the journey, not only on arrival.
Full sleeper, semi-sleeper or executive: what is the difference?
In short: on an executive coach, the seat reclines only a little; on a semi-leito (semi-sleeper), it reclines much further, with leg support; on a full sleeper, the seat becomes a bed, which is why it is the only one that makes sense for a whole night on the road. The full comparison, with the calculations of when each one is worthwhile, is in our article on sleeper, semi-sleeper or executive.
Frequently asked questions
Does it travel overnight?
Yes, and that is the appeal. Departure from Porto Alegre is at 9am and the first stretch runs through the night: you have dinner, watch the road go by, sleep on the sleeper and wake up in Minas. The return follows the same pattern. The day is not "lost" on the road; it is put to use.
What about people who cannot sleep on a coach?
More people manage than you might imagine, because the seat really does lie flat. And for the moments awake, there is satellite internet to chat, watch videos and listen to music. Those who sleep little at night make up for it with naps the next day: the second day of the trip is a light one, for arriving and settling in.
What should I take in my hand luggage?
The essentials for the first night and the first day: medication, documents, a change of clothes, toiletries, the blanket and the neck pillow. The full caravan list is in the article on what to pack for a Spiritist caravan, and the general list, for any of our trips, is on the get ready page.
The road is part of the trip
After this first stretch, the journeys get shorter, an hour here, four hours there. The large coach takes care of the outward and return journeys, and the rest is itinerary. If you are choosing between departures, we also have a guide on how to choose between excursions departing from Porto Alegre. Do you have a question about the coach, the seat or your specific needs? Message me on WhatsApp, Ana Carla: I have travelled on this sleeper myself and I will answer plainly. Your place on November 2026: Triângulo Mineiro and Águas de Caldas Novas is secured with a deposit; the remainder is paid in instalments until boarding.
