Before Uberaba became the well-known capital of fraternal welcome and large public gatherings, the story of Brazil's best-loved medium began in the absolute simplicity of a small town in the Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte. It was in Pedro Leopoldo, among green hills and the whistle of the textile factory, that Francisco Cândido Xavier was born on 2 April 1910 and lived for nearly five decades of his life.
Visiting Pedro Leopoldo on Guatambu Travel caravans is a moving experience. Far from any ostentation, the town preserves the quiet atmosphere of rural Minas Gerais and allows travellers to understand the roots of renunciation, humility and love of one's neighbour that marked the whole of Chico Xavier's life.
The historic landmarks of Chico's life in Pedro Leopoldo
Walking the streets of the town means retracing the steps of the young Chico, from a childhood full of hardship to the publication of his first psychographed works:
- Centro Espírita Luiz Gonzaga: Founded in June 1927 by Chico Xavier and his brothers, it is the cradle of the medium's mediumistic work. In that simple room the first poems of "Parnaso de Além-Túmulo" began to be received, along with the messages that would draw the attention of researchers and intellectuals across the country. The place preserves an atmosphere of deep serenity and respect.
- Casa de Chico Xavier: The modest home where he lived with his family holds period photographs, personal belongings, handwritten letters and the humble atmosphere in which he lived while balancing household chores, his work at the weaving mill and at the Ministério da Agricultura (Ministry of Agriculture) with tireless devotion to those in need.
- O Açucareiro: An emblematic spot in the rural area of the municipality where the young medium used to withdraw to pray in the shade of leafy trees, seeking spiritual refuge and inspiration for the mission that was beginning.
From a modest childhood to national recognition
In Pedro Leopoldo, Chico Xavier experienced the pain of losing his mother, Dona Maria João de Deus, at an early age, long working days as a boy and the first public challenges of his mediumship. It was also there that he met his spiritual guide, Emmanuel, in 1931, sealing a commitment to Christian service based on the triad of discipline, discipline and discipline.
Only in January 1959, for health reasons and following spiritual guidance, did Chico move to Uberaba, where he would spend the rest of his days. For this reason, getting to know Pedro Leopoldo completes the picture of the moral and spiritual formation of a man who devoted his life to comforting the afflicted.
