Few spiritual experiences in Brazil touch the soul as deeply as passing through the doors of the Santuário Nacional de Aparecida. As pilgrims catch sight of the immense exposed-brick dome rising over the Vale do Paraíba and hear the bells echoing in the distance, a wave of emotion takes hold. Throughout the year, millions of Brazilians arrive at the capital of faith to give thanks for graces received, to renew their requests, or simply to shed tears of relief and hope before the Patroness of Brazil.
On Guatambu Travel's faith caravans, organised from Porto Alegre and with years on the road, the pilgrimage to Aparecida is treated with the respect, gentleness and reverence that this sacred moment deserves.
More than three hundred years of devotion and miracles
The story that gave rise to the largest Marian shrine on the planet began in the simple waters of the Rio Paraíba do Sul, in October 1717. Three humble fishermen, after hours of fruitless attempts to catch fish, drew up in their nets first the body and then the head of a small, blackened terracotta image. From that moment, the fish multiplied in abundance and the first prayers began in a modest household oratory.
Over the centuries, devotion grew without interruption, leading to the building of the first chapel, the historic Basílica Velha in the 19th century and, finally, the majestic Santuário Nacional in the 20th century:
- The Basílica Nova (New Basilica): Designed by the architect Benedito Calixto de Jesus Neto and consecrated by Pope Saint John Paul II in 1980, it is the second largest Catholic church in the world. Its monumental Greek-cross nave holds tens of thousands of worshippers at once in celebrations of deep liturgical beauty.
- The Nicho de Nossa Senhora (Niche of Our Lady): Protected by bulletproof glass in a gilded altarpiece, the original 36-centimetre image draws emotional gazes and silent prayers in the south nave of the basilica.
- The Passarela da Fé (Walkway of Faith): At nearly 400 metres long, the elevated walkway links the Basílica Nova to the historic Basílica Velha. It is one of the most traditional places to walk in prayer, taking in the panoramic view of the city.
- The Sala das Promessas (Room of Promises): In the basement of the basilica, thousands of ex-votos, photographs, letters and objects left by devotees bear witness to healings, overcoming hardship and miracles that touch the heart of any visitor.
