For anyone discovering Spiritist doctrine, or wishing to deepen their study of life and spirituality, the number of titles in bookshops can seem enormous. Yet the whole body of doctrine rests on five classic books organised by Allan Kardec in Paris in the second half of the 19th century, affectionately known as the five basic works or the Spiritist Pentateuch.
On Mundo a Passeio's reflection trips to cities such as Uberaba and Sacramento, in Minas Gerais, our passengers often talk about which book to choose to begin with, or to give to a friend. Knowing the central theme of each one helps you find the right reading for each person's moment.
1. The Spirits' Book (O Livro dos Espíritos, 1857): The philosophical starting point
Published in Paris on 18 April 1857, it is the cornerstone of Spiritism. Made up of 1,019 questions put by Allan Kardec and answered by various spirits through mediums in different countries, the book addresses the great enigmas of existence: the creation of the universe, the nature of God, the immortality of the soul, the plurality of existences (reincarnation) and the moral laws that govern human evolution.
Who it is for: Those looking for a broad, rational overview of the meaning of life and the destiny of the soul after physical death.
2. The Mediums' Book (O Livro dos Médiuns, 1861): The practical guide to mediumship
Published in January 1861, this is the essential manual for understanding how spiritual manifestations occur. Kardec approaches mediumship not as a privilege or a supernatural phenomenon, but as a natural faculty inherent in human beings, one that calls for study, discernment and ethical conduct.
Who it is for: Those who study sensory perceptions, take part in spiritual support meetings or want to understand the care and discipline required in mediumistic practice.
3. The Gospel According to Spiritism (O Evangelho Segundo o Espiritismo, 1864): Comfort for the heart
Published in April 1864, it is the most widely read and reread of the five, and it is found in the homes of millions of people. In it, Kardec gathers the moral teachings of Jesus, highlighting themes such as forgiveness, patience, charity, humility and prayer, explained in the light of reincarnation and divine justice. It is the basis of the family Evangelho no Lar (Gospel at Home) gatherings.
Who it is for: Those seeking emotional relief, moral guidance through everyday difficulties and inner renewal. It is often the most welcoming book to begin with.
4. Heaven and Hell (O Céu e o Inferno, 1865): Divine justice demystified
Published in August 1865, the work examines the traditional notions of eternal punishment, heaven, purgatory and angels, setting them against the justice of an infinitely just and good Creator. The second part of the book offers moving accounts of spirits in different conditions after physical death, showing that each conscience reaps exactly what it sowed during life on Earth.
Who it is for: Those who wish to overcome the fear of death or to understand the process of spiritual transition with serenity.
5. Genesis (A Gênese, 1868): The dialogue with science and nature
The last work of the codification, published in January 1868, analyses the miracles and wonders of the Gospel from a rational perspective, showing that they obey natural laws of matter and of the cosmic fluid, in harmony with the scientific advances of the time.
Who it is for: Those who enjoy debates between science, astronomy, geology and spirituality.
Living these teachings on the road
Reading the books is wonderful, but seeing for yourself the places where these ideals were put into practice turns reading into experience. On our caravans, we visit fraternal hospitals, schools founded by pioneers and places where consoling letters restored hope to thousands of families.
