Allan Kardec quotes and teachings: what they mean

Open any social network and you will find dozens of quotes attributed to Allan Kardec: attractive, ready to share and, often, never written by him. Almost 170 years after the publication of O Livro dos Espíritos (The Spirits' Book), the codifier's name has become an easy signature for thoughts of every kind.

Here we do things differently: this text gathers only two quotes with a stated origin, and then presents, with the proper references, the central teachings of each basic work, faithfully paraphrased and never invented. If you like sharing reflective messages and want to quote with confidence, this text is for you.

"Outside charity there is no salvation"

The best-known quote of Spiritism is the motto of O Evangelho Segundo o Espiritismo, published in 1864, and it appears in chapter XV. The origin is stated in the work itself.

What does it mean, according to the doctrine? O Evangelho Segundo o Espiritismo deals with Christian morality, and the motto sums up its central teaching: the evolution of the spirit passes through love of one's neighbour in action. According to the doctrine, believing or knowing is not enough: it is charity in practice that moves the spirit forward. That is why this quote appears in Spiritist centres, books and messages of comfort all over Brazil.

"Be born, die, be reborn again and always progress: such is the law"

The second quote is not in a book: it is carved in stone. According to the description published by the Spiritist association areq.net, it appears on the frontispiece of Allan Kardec's tomb in Père-Lachaise cemetery, in Paris: "Naître, mourir, renaître encore et progresser sans cesse, telle est la Loi". The wording of the epitaph varies between publications, and we did not check it against a source from the Federação Espírita Brasileira.

The inscription sums up in a single line the essence of the doctrine organised in O Livro dos Espíritos: reincarnation and the continuous progress of the spirit. The tomb is shaped like a dolmen and bears a bronze bust, according to the same source.

Why so many false quotes circulate

It is worth being honest: attributing thoughts to famous names is an old habit, and the internet has supercharged the problem. Faced with an attractive quote, the advice is simple: be suspicious if the work and chapter are not given. For the quotes listed above, we give the origin; for the rest, we deal with paraphrased teachings, each with its work of origin.

The central teachings, work by work

Instead of isolated quotes, the safest path is to learn what each book teaches. These are the central teachings of the five basic works, paraphrased:

There is also a teaching that lies less in the books and more in Kardec's own example: the method. According to Kardec's own account, transcribed in the biography by Henri Sausse published by the FEB, "more than ten mediums lent their assistance" to the work of questions, and the comparison of the answers produced the first edition of O Livro dos Espíritos. The source does not say that the mediums were unknown to one another.

Where these quotes come to life

In Brazil, these teachings left the pages and became practice, and names such as Chico Xavier devoted their lives to them. The psychographed letters he delivered to entire families are the charity of the Gospel in motion; our article on psychography and Chico Xavier's letters goes deeper into that story, and the article on Allan Kardec and Spiritism explains the doctrine in plain language.

Frequently asked questions

Is "Outside charity there is no salvation" by Allan Kardec?

Yes. It is the motto of O Evangelho Segundo o Espiritismo (1864), presented in chapter XV. It is one of the two quotes this article cites.

What is written on Allan Kardec's tomb?

Why not list more famous quotes?

Because many quotes attributed to Kardec on the internet have no documented origin in his works. Here we quote verbatim only two quotes, with the origin stated, and, for the rest, paraphrased teachings with the reference work.

How many works did Allan Kardec write?

The five basic works of Spiritism: O Livro dos Espíritos, O Livro dos Médiuns, O Evangelho Segundo o Espiritismo, O Céu e o Inferno and A Gênese. Before those, he published educational works as a teacher. Sausse's biography speaks of "numerous works" and does not fix the total.
