Travelling by coach in a group is one of the most enjoyable ways to discover Brazil and South America. The journey begins as soon as the coach hits the road: it is a time to admire the scenery, rest from your routine, enjoy a good chat and make new friends who share your interests.

However, for the trip to be perfect from start to finish, the choice of travel agency makes all the difference. With decades of dedication to road tourism from Porto Alegre and the metropolitan area, Guatambu Travel has put together seven essential guidelines to check before you reserve your place on any excursion.

1. Check the Cadastur registration

Every travel agency, charter operator and tour guide must be duly registered with Cadastur, the registry of the Ministério do Turismo (Ministry of Tourism). Registration shows that the company operates legally and meets inspection standards. Reputable companies display their Cadastur number and CNPJ openly in the website footer and in their contracts.

2. Know the type of coach being booked

Not every coach is the same. On long routes, such as trips to Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro or Argentina, the difference between an executivo (executive), a semi-leito (semi-sleeper) and a leito-cama (full sleeper) coach is decisive for your rest:

Ask in advance about the standard of the vehicle and whether the company holds authorisation from the ANTT (for interstate trips) or DAER (in Rio Grande do Sul).

3. Assess the location and category of the hotels

Be wary of packages with excessively low prices that leave out the names of the hotels. Staying in isolated neighbourhoods or places that are hard to reach can turn free time into an inconvenience. Check whether the hotel has a lift, a good breakfast and a safe location for walks.

4. Look at the pace of the itinerary

One of the most common mistakes of inexperienced operators is to put too many attractions into a single day. Rushed itineraries leave passengers exhausted and prevent each moment from being enjoyed. A good itinerary allows for rest breaks, unhurried meals and free time.

5. Insist on travel insurance being included

Health emergencies can happen to anyone at any age. A responsible excursion includes travel insurance with broad medical and hospital cover on all of its departures, ensuring prompt care without unexpected costs for the traveller.

6. A dedicated trip coordinator on board

The driver must focus exclusively on driving the vehicle safely. For this reason, an experienced guide or coordinator on board is indispensable to handle hotel check-in, organise the tours, support passengers who have difficulties and look after the wellbeing of everyone.

7. Clarity in the contract and in what is included

Before paying, find out exactly what the price covers: tickets, meals, optional tours and fees. Having everything itemised in writing avoids misunderstandings and gives complete peace of mind.
