If we had to sum up all the moral wisdom codified by Allan Kardec in a single precept, it would be found in the chapter devoted to the Law of Justice, Love and Charity in O Livro dos Espiritos (The Spirits' Book). The spirit world presents this law as the synthesis and crowning of all the other natural laws, because it sums up the greatest duty of human beings towards the Creator and towards their fellow men and women.
For those seeking serenity, forgiveness and emotional balance, the lessons in this chapter offer a reliable guide for untying the knots of resentment and living with a light heart.
What true justice is
According to Spiritist doctrine, justice consists in strictly respecting the rights of each person. This right is not determined solely by passing human laws, but by the eternal rule of conscience: not doing to others what we would not want done to us.
True justice always walks hand in hand with fraternal love, because applying justice without compassion easily degenerates into cruelty and revenge.
The unforgettable definition of charity
In the famous question 886 of O Livro dos Espiritos, Kardec asks what the true meaning of the word charity is, as Jesus understood it. The answer given by the spiritual benefactors is one of the most luminous pages in world literature:
"Benevolence towards everyone, indulgence for the imperfections of others and forgiveness of offences."
This definition shows that charity is much more than the material donation of coins or food:
- Benevolence towards everyone: The genuine wish for the good of all beings, extending kind words, attentive listening and welcoming attitudes.
- Indulgence for the imperfections of others: The understanding that each person is on their own rung of evolution and that we all also need the patience of others.
- Forgiveness of offences: The conscious refusal to nurse resentment, understanding that the one who offends is the one who suffers most spiritually.
Moral charity in everyday life
Practising this ethic day by day transforms family life, the workplace and life in the community. It teaches us to look at the weaknesses of others with the eyes of a physician rather than a judge, promoting reconciliation and harmony.
