Is work merely a material obligation to ensure survival, or is there a deeper spiritual meaning in daily effort? In examining the Law of Work in the third part of O Livro dos Espiritos, Allan Kardec raises human activity to the status of a natural law, indispensable for the intellectual, moral and spiritual development of the human being.

At the same time, with admirable wisdom and balance, the doctrine makes clear that rest is not only a legitimate right, but a physiological and moral need for maintaining human harmony.

What Spiritism understands by work

For higher spirituality, the definition of work goes far beyond paid employment with a formal contract. Work is defined as:

"Every useful occupation."

This means that patient study, loving education of children, running a home, artistic creation, volunteering and dedication to community causes are legitimate and noble forms of work. Work exercises the mind, counters mental inertia and makes the human being an active collaborator in divine creation.

Who is exempt from work?

Kardec's answer is clear: no one is exempt from the need to produce something useful, apart from the limitations imposed by illness or advanced age. And even when the physical body reaches the stage of well-earned rest from material labours, the mind can and should remain active in reading, in serene guidance of the young and in compassionate prayer.

The sacred right to rest and leisure

One of the most luminous points of this chapter is the value it places on rest. The Spirits state that rest is indispensable for restoring the body's strength and giving thought its freedom, and they condemn excessive work that degrades health and shortens life.

After decades of dedication to work and family, enjoying maturity through pleasant trips, enriching outings and contact with nature is the harmonious fulfilment of the divine laws.
