When we hear news of conflicts, natural disasters or the unexpected loss of loved ones, the human heart is often troubled by deep questions: why does suffering exist? What lies beyond physical death? In examining the Law of Destruction in the third part of O Livro dos Espíritos, Allan Kardec offers serene and consoling answers that calm the soul and dispel despair.

For Spiritism, biological death is not the end of life, but only the transformation of matter and the return of the immortal spirit to its true homeland.

Necessary destruction and the renewal of life

Kardec explains that, in physical nature, the disintegration of bodies is an indispensable condition for the renewal and improvement of material beings. The organic body wears out and completes its temporal cycle, but the intelligent principle, which is the eternal spirit, suffers no destruction at all.

The soul takes leave of its fleshly garment just as someone changes a worn-out set of clothes, keeping its individuality, its memories, its feelings and its bonds of affection intact.

The meaning of destructive scourges

Why does humanity go through calamities and epidemics? The spirits explain that great scourges hasten the moral progress of the community. In moments of collective pain, pride and selfishness give way to international solidarity, to the heroism of rescuers and to fraternal cooperation among peoples, uniting hearts that once lived far apart.

Furthermore, in the spiritual plane, those who depart together receive welcoming support and are reunited with relatives who went before them on the great journey home.

The certainty of a loving reunion

The greatest message of the Promised Comforter is the assurance of reunion. The bonds of true love are never undone by the grave. Loved ones who have departed remain alive, pray for us, inspire good thoughts in us and wait for us in the spiritual plane with the same affection as always.

Praying for those who have departed and keeping our longing serene, free of despair, is the greatest gift we can send to those who continue their journey in the light.
