Some destinations surprise you precisely because they are not on the most obvious itineraries. The Termas Romanas, out in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul, are one of these well-kept treasures: you cross the green countryside of the gaúcho region, turn onto a quiet road and, before you know it, you are facing columns, arches and warm pools that look as if they came straight from a bath in ancient Rome. The water is salty, the warmth is relaxing and the beauty appears where you least expect it. And it suits an unhurried trip in good company like few other places.
Where are the Termas Romanas?
The Termas Romanas are in Recanto do Maestro, a district of the municipality of Restinga Sêca, in the central region of Rio Grande do Sul, near Santa Maria and the so-called Quarta Colônia of Italian immigration. The name is no brochure exaggeration: the thermal complex was built inspired by the great Roman baths, with classical architecture, columns, staircases and an attention to aesthetics that makes visitors walk slowly just to notice the details.
The first impression tends to be the same for everyone: that of having arrived somewhere made for slowing down. Everything there, from the architecture to the silence of the surrounding countryside, seems to whisper that you should breathe deeply and ease the pace.
Why is the water at the Termas Romanas salty and warm?
The pools at the Termas Romanas hold salty thermal water that is warm. The warm water welcomes the body as soon as you step in, your shoulders loosen, conversation slows down and time, frankly, stops hurrying. The salt gives that pleasant feeling of lightness in the water, and the comfortable temperature invites you to soak with no set time to leave.
It is the kind of bath you enjoy without rushing: you get in slowly, alternate time in the water with rest beside the pool and let your body say thank you. For older travellers, it is a delight for exactly this reason: it is good for body and mood without asking for any effort.
At the Termas Romanas, the water is not just leisure: it is an invitation to stop, feel your body relax and let the landscape do the rest.
What is Recanto do Maestro?
Recanto do Maestro, in Restinga Sêca (RS), is a planned community with a strong Italian inspiration, dedicated to culture, education and good living. Walking around the place is part of its charm: the carefully crafted architecture, the gardens, the art spaces and the calm of the countryside make a setting that few expect to find in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul.
The region also preserves the heritage of the Italian immigration of the Quarta Colônia, with cantinas (Italian-style wineries and restaurants), wines, cheeses and the generous table that the south does so well. It is nature, culture and well-being in the same outing.
What to do there
- Unhurried thermal baths: the main activity. Go with plenty of time and respect your body's pace in the water.
- Admire the architecture: the columns, arches and staircases of the baths make for good photographs and a pleasant walk.
- Gentle walks: the surroundings of Recanto do Maestro call for relaxed strolls, with plenty of shade and fresh air.
- Flavours of the Quarta Colônia: enjoy the region's Italian heritage, with pasta, wines, cheeses and homemade sweets.
- Real rest: set aside some time to simply do nothing. Here, that is making the most of the visit.
What is the best time to visit the Termas Romanas?
Because it is a destination of warm waters, the Termas Romanas are even more inviting in the cooler months of the year, between autumn and winter (from April to September). The gaúcho chill outside makes a delightful contrast with the hot water: you step into the pool and your body is doubly grateful. The visit is also worthwhile in the warmer months, you just need to pace your time in the water and your hydration more carefully.
