A purple stone sounds like a small subject for a whole journey. In Ametista do Sul, it becomes a way into geology, local work, architecture and the town’s identity. The interesting question is how one material ended up telling so many different stories.

Guatambu’s 27 to 29 November 2026 departure pairs Ametista with Derrubadas and Yucumã. The three-day trip leaves Porto Alegre by sleeper coach and includes two nights. Bring room for questions before making room for purchases. A striking geode can be persuasive; it still has to fit in your luggage.

Start with the outside of the specimen

The Geological Survey of Brazil describes a geode as a cavity lined internally with crystals. Studies of this region associate amethyst deposits with basalt. Look at the enclosing rock as well as the crystalline interior: they show different parts of the object’s story.

Comparing shapes and sizes in a collection needs no specialist vocabulary. At a mine-related visit, ask about the work and the material’s uses. You can have a satisfying visit without buying a specimen. Understanding what you have seen is a perfectly respectable souvenir, and an unusually easy one to carry.

Follow the stone into the town

At Igreja Matriz São Gabriel, amethyst becomes part of a religious building. The state tourism listing describes geodes in the altar and baptismal font. Notice how texture and light work within a space that people use for worship, rather than treating it as another display cabinet.

Vinícola Ametista, Museu do Bambu and Ametista Parque Museu broaden the picture. Bamboo introduces another material; the winery and underground restaurant show tourism uses of places associated with mining. Their value lies in the differences between them.

Leave room for the river to be a river

Sema describes Yucumã as longitudinal, following the river’s course. Look along the landscape rather than searching for a single curtain of falling water.

Yucumã is in Parque Estadual do Turvo, Derrubadas, beside the Uruguay River. Visibility depends on river conditions, not the month printed on the itinerary. Check close to departure and follow the visitor guidance. Rocks, plants and other natural materials belong in the protected area.

Wear firm footwear you already trust. For assistance needs, discuss actual steps, uneven surfaces and walking at each stop. A general description of one attraction as accessible cannot describe the whole route.

Know which tasting is which

The advertised price is BRL 1,682 per person sharing a double room. The programme lists transport, accompaniment, itinerary admissions and two nights with breakfast at Pousada & Container Mina Beer. It also includes one lunch at Belvedere Mina, a café colonial, and tastings at Vinícola Ametista and Museu do Bambu.

Extra drinks, the second day’s free-choice lunch and dinner, and the Ametista Parque Museu tasting are additional. Similar venue names do not mean identical inclusions. Read the Ametista and Derrubadas departure overview, then ask about current availability, price, boarding, dietary needs and visiting conditions. Confirm language support if required; this English guide does not establish an English-speaking guide service.
