Evangelho no lar: what it is and how to do it, step by step

Of all the practices of Spiritism, there is one that needs no temple, no medium and no deep knowledge: all it takes is one hour a week, at home, with the family together. This is evangelho no lar (the Gospel at Home), perhaps the simplest Spiritist practice of all and, for many families, the one that changes everyday life the most.

In this text, we explain what it is, how to do it step by step and why a fixed day and time make such a difference. We also tell you where our group shares this practice on the caravan, because there is an evening of the Evangelho in the itinerary.

What evangelho no lar is

Evangelho no lar is a Spiritist family practice, held weekly, on a fixed day and time. The format is simple: opening prayer, reading of a passage from O Evangelho Segundo o Espiritismo (The Gospel According to Spiritism), family commentary and closing prayer.

The purpose, according to the doctrine, is twofold. First, the study of the gospel in the light of Spiritist doctrine: reading and talking about the teachings of Jesus according to the Spiritist interpretation. Second, the harmonisation of the home: setting aside a weekly moment of peace, as a family, away from the news and the rush.

How to do it, step by step

The practice needs no special equipment. This is the traditional format:

  1. Choose the day and time. Set a weekly appointment with the family and try to keep to it.
  2. Say the opening prayer. A simple prayer, to gather the group and open the moment.
  3. Read a passage from O Evangelho Segundo o Espiritismo. The book, compiled by Allan Kardec, comments on the teachings of the gospel; a short passage is enough, you do not need much.
  4. Talk about the reading. Each family member says what they understood, without hurry and without formality. This is where the study happens: what does this teaching say about our lives?
  5. Close with the final prayer. Give thanks and gather your thoughts, closing the cycle.

Note what is not needed: no special table, no special clothes, no long session. The recommendation of the practice is a different one: consistency and simplicity.

Why a fixed day and time?

This is the part that most surprises newcomers: the recommendation really is a fixed day and time, kept week after week. The reason lies in the purpose of the practice. A meeting whose time changes every week becomes occasional; a fixed meeting becomes a habit, and habit is what sustains both the study and the harmonisation of the home.

There is also a sense of respect for the commitment: setting the time with the family means treating the practice as the meeting it is, not as a task done when time allows.

Evangelho no lar on the caravan

Evangelho no lar is a practice for the home, but on our caravan it becomes an evening for the whole group. In the itinerary, on day 4, in the evening, the group takes part in an Evangelho meeting: the same format as the family practice (prayer, reading, commentary, closing prayer) shared with the workers and the other travellers.

For those who did not yet know the practice, it is a good way to begin: see how it works, get a taste for it and take the habit home. For those who already practise it, it is a moment of fellowship away from home that tends to stay in the memory. See how we travel at /saindo-de-porto-alegre/caravana-espirita.
