Praying is an innate need of the human soul. In moments of joy or distress, human thought rises spontaneously in search of protection, serenity and thanks to the Creator. In opening the third part of O Livro dos Espíritos (The Spirits' Book) with the Law of Worship, Allan Kardec devotes pages of rare beauty to the analysis of prayer, revealing its scientific mechanism and its boundless power of moral transformation.
Far from memorised formulas or mechanical repetition, Spiritism teaches that praying is an intimate act of love, communion and attunement with the higher forces of the universe.
What it truly means to worship God
Kardec explains that worshipping God does not mean bowing before images or performing ostentatious rituals. True worship is that of the heart, and it shows when a person follows the divine moral laws, does good to others and contemplates the perfect order of nature with humility and reverence.
Outward worship is valid only when it reflects a sincere, inner feeling; without purity of heart, outward gestures become empty.
Prayer according to Allan Kardec
In the spirits' famous definition, prayer is an act of spiritual charity that contains three essential elements:
- Praise: Recognise the greatness, wisdom and love of Divine Providence in creation.
- Ask: Request the assistance of good spirits in order to obtain moral strength, patience, courage and discernment to overcome trials.
- Give thanks: Express gratitude for everyday blessings, for opportunities to begin again and even for the difficulties that teach us to mature.
The value of prayer lies entirely in the sincerity of the thought and not in the number of words. A simple sentence spoken with pure emotion reaches the highest planes of spirituality far more effectively than long, memorised speeches.
The fluidic and comforting action of prayer
When praying with fervour, a person raises their vibrational frequency and projects soothing mental waves. This current of love draws the loving presence of mentors and guardian angels, renewing the spirit, calming anxiety and strengthening the defences of the spiritual body.
Besides benefiting the person who prays, prayer can be directed to other people, incarnate or discarnate, acting as a true remedy of light sent from a distance to comfort the sick and ease the afflicted.
