Anyone researching the Pantanal, Bonito and Foz do Iguaçu will almost always find the three trips sold separately, each with its own logistics, flights and travel days. Our water expedition brings the three together in a single itinerary, departing from Porto Alegre, because they lie on the same road axis.

Below is the day-by-day itinerary, exactly as it happens: nine days, from boarding at the Haudi Park until the journey home. No extra promises, no hidden small print.

Day 1: departure from Porto Alegre

At 10am the double-decker leito coach (sleeper-class coach) departs from the Haudi Park, in Porto Alegre. The water expedition begins, with onboard service and plenty of anticipation. The first day is spent on the road, and the road is part of the trip too: it is where the group gets to know each other.

Day 2: arrival at Fazenda San Francisco

We arrive at Fazenda San Francisco, in the heart of the Pantanal. After dinner comes the night spotting (focagem noturna): the group heads out in the safari vehicle through the darkness, looking for the eyes of the jaguar and for all the life that only appears at night.

It is worth stating the obvious, which is not always said: spotting a jaguar is never guaranteed. What the trip guarantees is being in the right place at the right time, with people who know the way.

Day 3: safari, chalana boat and on to Bonito

A morning of photo safari and a chalana (flat-bottomed river boat) trip on the Rio Miranda, with piranha fishing and Pantanal wildlife up close. After a Pantanal-style lunch, we continue to Bonito, arriving at around 6.30pm.

Day 4: Bonito and the Nascente Azul

A day in Bonito, the capital of crystal-clear waters. In the morning, the Balneário Nascente Azul, where the water is so clean that you can see the fish with the naked eye. In the afternoon, we head back.

One important point, so there are no surprises: snorkelling (flutuação) is optional and is not included in the price of the trip. Those who want to get into the water book it on the spot; those who prefer to stay at the resort facilities enjoy the day just the same.

Day 5: Parque das Cachoeiras and on to Foz

In the morning, the Parque das Cachoeiras and its waterfalls for swimming. In the afternoon, the overnight journey to Foz do Iguaçu begins.

Day 6: Foz and Ciudad del Este

We arrive in Foz. After breakfast, we cross to Ciudad del Este, in Paraguay, for the shopping tour. Then we return to the hotel to rest.

Day 7: the Cataratas do Iguaçu

The big day: the Cataratas do Iguaçu (Iguaçu Falls), one of the natural wonders of the world, breathtaking. The afternoon is free, with the optional suggestion of the Parque das Aves.

Day 8: Puerto Iguazú and the catamaran

A morning of shopping in Puerto Iguazú, in Argentina. In the afternoon comes the highlight for many in the group: a catamaran cruise on the Rio Iguaçu, with sunset and dinner on board, as far as the Ponte da Fraternidade. The return begins at 7.30pm.

Day 9: arrival in Porto Alegre

Arrival in Porto Alegre, with the feeling of having seen the wildest and most beautiful side of Brazil.

How long does the trip to the Pantanal, Bonito and Foz last?

Nine days in total, counting the outbound and return coach journeys from Porto Alegre. Of these, two involve longer road stretches (the first and the last) and the other seven concentrate the visits in the Pantanal, Bonito and Foz do Iguaçu.

Is snorkelling in Bonito included?

No. Snorkelling (flutuação) is an optional activity, booked by those who want it, and it is not included in the price of the package. What the itinerary provides is the day at the Balneário Nascente Azul and, the following day, the Parque das Cachoeiras.

Can you really see a jaguar in the Pantanal?

The night spotting at Fazenda San Francisco is part of the programme and takes place at the time of greatest chance of sightings, right after dinner. Even so, wild animals cannot be scheduled: whether you see one or not depends on the night. Those who go with that expectation adjusted usually come back delighted with the whole experience, and not just with the jaguar.

Do you need a passport for the Paraguay and Argentina legs?

The itinerary crosses into Ciudad del Este, in Paraguay, and Puerto Iguazú, in Argentina. For Brazilians, an identity document in good condition satisfies the Mercosur agreement, and the passport remains the smoothest option. The travel agent confirms the documentation with you before departure.

How does travel between the destinations work?

Everything is by land, in the same double-decker leito coach that leaves Porto Alegre, with onboard service. That is what makes it possible to combine the three destinations in one trip: they lie on the same road axis, and the group does not have to unpack and repack bags at airports.
