Uberaba: things to do beyond Chico Xavier
When we talk about Uberaba, the name that comes first is Chico Xavier, and rightly so. The medium lived in the city from 1959 until 30 June 2002, the day he died, which is why Uberaba became part of the itinerary for people travelling to follow this story. But those who arrive discover that the city is not defined by a single name: it has a whole itinerary to experience, with stops that tell his life story up close.
In this article, I explain what our caravan does in Uberaba, and why the visit even includes time to rest, because a good trip is one with a good rhythm.
Casa de Memórias e Lembranças: the house where he lived
The visit begins where his life took place. The Casa de Memórias e Lembranças is the former home of Chico Xavier, at Rua Dom Pedro I, 165, in the Parque das Américas district. There you will find his personal belongings, from real everyday life: the home of a man who lived simply.
Opening hours are: Monday to Friday, 8am to 11am and 1pm to 5.30pm; Saturday, 8am to 12 noon. The tip I always give: arrive early. The house receives visitors from all over Brazil, and the queue moves better in the morning.
For those who like to prepare beforehand, we have a complete guide to the visit in Chico Xavier in Uberaba: visiting itinerary.
Memorial Chico Xavier: the collection the city built
The Memorial Chico Xavier is at Avenida João XXIII, 2011. It opened on 10 June 2016 and reopened on 30 June 2024, after a complete redevelopment. The date is no coincidence: 30 June is the anniversary of Chico's death.
Entry is free. The initial collection brings together 187 psychographed works donated to the memorial, and the city expects to receive around 90,000 visitors a year. According to Spiritist doctrine, psychographed works are books that the medium attributed to spirits. The collection exists and is historic; the spiritual authorship is a matter of faith, and we present both things honestly.
If you would like to know more before going, we have covered everything in Memorial Chico Xavier: what you will find.
The tomb at Cemitério São João Batista
Another stop that leaves a mark is the tomb of Chico Xavier, at Cemitério São João Batista (Avenida Maria Santana Borges, 01). The cemetery is open every day, from 7am to 6pm, and the tomb has a distinctive architectural treatment, built by admirers.
The atmosphere there is one of silence and prayer. Many people light a candle, while others simply stand quietly. There is no right way: there is your way.
The passe sessions
Besides the visits, the group takes part in the passe sessions, the mediumistic care that Spiritist centres offer to the community. It is a moment of reflection, in which each traveller receives the passe in their own time.
For those who have never taken part in anything similar, we prepare the group beforehand: we explain how it works, what to do and what to expect. It is also worth reading How to behave in a Spiritist house.
Free afternoon and November weather
Amid so much itinerary, we have set aside a free afternoon in Uberaba. It is time to rest at the hotel, walk with no commitments or revisit a place that moved you, because emotion is tiring too, and respecting your own rhythm is part of the trip.
As for the weather: in November, it is around 28 °C in Uberaba. So bring light clothing, a hat or cap, sunscreen and a bottle of water in your bag. The Minas heat is no joke, but with these precautions the visit is comfortable.
